Odilon Redon, born Bertrand-Jean Redon (April 20, 1840 to July 6, 1916) was a popular French Symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Redon was born in Bordeaux, Aquitaine to a prosperous family and was instructed by Rodolphe Bresdin in etching and lithography. In the 1890s he began using pastels and oils, which would dominate the work he would produce the rest of his life.
